I always enjoy seeking challenges and working on projects where I can unleash my creativity. That’s why I was thrilled to start 2025 with the competition of the MÁV Symphony Orchestra. The task was to design a logo and a visual identity that faithfully reflects the spirit and style of the orchestra. The challenge lay in designing for a symphony orchestra whose performance I had never attended. Naturally, I began the design process with thorough research. I find it crucial in such cases to get to know the people or organization I am designing a logo or identity for. By exploring their social media channels, such as YouTube and Facebook, I familiarized myself with their visual and auditory style as well as the overall atmosphere of the orchestra.
One of the most important aspects of modern visual identity design is finding the right balance in the design: the appearance should be neither overcrowded nor overly simplistic but should harmoniously adapt to different platforms. In the case of the symphony orchestra, the primary guiding principle was discreet elegance, which I considered particularly important.
Regarding placement and proportions, I applied strict guidelines, but for the overall visual identity, I allowed room for playfulness and diverse approaches to come through. The freedom of the visual identity extends only as far as it does not violate the rules of the logo. These proportional rules were established to ensure optimal visibility.
An important consideration for me when designing the logo and visual identity was to avoid imposing overly rigid constraints, ensuring that the identity could adapt flexibly to various contexts. For me, classical music represents strict rules, but the visual identity surrounding it must be sufficiently flexible and efficient to convey the elegance that needs to thrive across a wide variety of platforms.
